INSTRUCTOR CLASS ’11
“Zumba is more than a fitness program to me. It helped me find “me” again!”
My name is Alison Bish, and I am from a small town, Weirton, WV, located in the northern panhandle of the state. While growing up, I spent 12 years studying various forms of dance: ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, and gymnastics. During my teenage years, dancing was my outlet from the pressures of high school and life.
When I went to college, I was in a rigorous engineering program at Virginia Tech, and all forms of exercise were placed on the back burner. I gained weight and lost a large chunk of my confidence too. I decided to leave engineering and Virginia Tech, and in a desperate effort to lose weight, I tried various forms of exercise. I enjoyed working out and the exhilarated feeling I had post-workout, but I did not enjoy anything enough to develop a regular workout routine. In 2008, I was introduced to Zumba. Everything changed. I found something I loved to do because I found a way to dance again. At the time, I finished school with a degree in teaching and was job hunting. A teaching job brought me to Roanoke.
After moving to Roanoke in August of 2008, I was unsuccessful with finding a Zumba class that fit my style. When that failed, I had the idea of getting certified and starting my own. Obtaining the certification was easy, but figuring out how to start a class was not. Then in 2010, Sara arrived in Roanoke! Her classes felt like a party and I wanted to learn from her. With Sara’s help, I’ve grown into the instructor I am today. I feel great, and shedding some pounds doing something I LOVE is an extra bonus.
