JDR Spotlight is a series where we get introduce you to some of our JDR Junkies. This gives you the chance to see the variety of participants we have at Just Dance Roanoke and allows you to get to know your dancing BFF’s a little better. We’ll be kicking off this series with our “Land of 1000 Dances” members. Read on to learn more about Latasha.
Meet Latasha Suggs! Third Grade teacher by day; self-proclaimed Just Dance addict by night (and early morning!) Latasha has been attending JDR for over three years and is our newest member to join the Land of 1000 Dances. Her first class was Just Dance Fitness 101 but she’s far from a beginner now with over 1,000 classes under her belt. Latasha knows she’s better when she’s dancing!
What brought you to your first class at JDR?
A former colleague of mine would often talk about Just Dance Roanoke and would suggest that I check it out. One fateful day, I did and my life was changed forever. I cannot imagine my life without the JDR Studio.
What was your fitness routine prior to coming to JDR?
I have a collection of at-home fitness DVDs including Leslie Sansone, Jillian Michaels and Zumba. I was an at-home workout person for the longest time as I never, ever dreamed I would take anybody’s group exercise class or set foot in a gym.
Has twerking always been your cardio? Or was this your first “real” dance experience?
JDR has been my first “real” dance experience. I feel as though the motto, “As long as you’re moving, you’re doing it right” was written just for me.
If you could be a back-up dancer for anyone, who would it be?
I would love to back up Justin Timberlake. I would also thoroughly enjoy the view as he is one fine piece of white chocolate!
What’s your favorite song(s) or favorite genre to dance to?
I believe all of the instructors would instantly tell you that “All I Do is Win” is my song. I love Rompe (are you ready?!?!), Shake, Ayo, Danza Kudoro, Worth It, Travesuras, Baliando, Problem, Freeze, Turn It Up, Church….I really could make several “Latasha’s Faves” playlists. I came to JDR for Zumba but I have stayed for Just Dance. I love the hip hop and pop music that we do and I think Pitbull is awesome!
In addition to some fantastic twerking skills, what have you learned from JDR?
I have learned to embrace the body I have. I have come to enjoy and crave that feeling that you get after an awesome workout. I have also learned to branch out and try other fitness activities such as Fit Rx (which introduced me to my personal trainer) and BodyPump. I have also learned that the hardest part of hitting a 5:30am Wake & Shake class is getting up but it is so worth it!
Describe your JDR experience in 3 words.
Life-changing, stress-relieving, phenomenal
Any advice for first timers or those early in their dance fitness journey?
HAVE FUN! Please know that no one is looking at you so there is no need to feel self-conscious. Even after 1,000 classes, I am still trying to keep myself straight (even though in my mind, I move just like Lindsey Cash). We are all there to sweat, dance, and have fantastic time. Keep coming and before you know it, you will start to recognize songs as soon as they come on and know exactly what moves to do…and you will move up from the back row (don’t worry, we all start there).
