Meet Christina Lauria! This Roanoke native has been a dancer her whole life and has a passion to share her love of dance with others. She’s turned her passion into a career and begins her new adventure in Los Angeles this week. We absolutely love the time Christina spends with us at JDR when she’s in town – her bubbly personality and contagious smile can light up any room. This girl is destined for great things. Go show LA what you’ve got, Christina! We can’t wait to hear all about your journey!
So, you’ve been taking classes here since December of 2012. What brought you to your first class?
I passed JDR on my way to dance class everyday and was always intrigued by the bright colors and the disco ball. Two of the biggest components in my life are fitness and dancing so when I researched what JDR was, I knew I had to try it out for myself. Obviously, I fell in love.
What are your favorite songs to twerk-out to when you’re dancing with us?
My favorite songs are high energy or hip hop, especially Beyonce!
You obviously have a passion for dance. When did you decide you wanted to make a career out of it?
I decided I wanted to make a career out of dance when I was about 16. Growing up in a studio, I fell more and more in love with the endless knowledge there is to learn surrounding dance and movement. I knew I wanted to have a career that inspired, motivated, and brought happiness to others and I believe dancing is an excellent way to do so.
How did you decide where you wanted to go to college? What made you choose the University of the Arts?
I decided on The University of the Arts because I knew it was a very diverse program. I am naturally attracted styles such as hip hop and contemporary but also have an appreciation for classical ballet and modern training. Ultimately, the ability to push myself in what I already loved and also further myself in styles I was less experienced in drew me to the program.
Tell us about some of the jobs you’ve had in the dance industry since graduating high school.
Last year, I had the life changing opportunity to tour with Dance Makers Inc. on their Love Conquers All Tour. As a part of a 11 member company called “The Collective”, I was able to travel every weekend somewhere across the nation to be mentored by & assist major choreographers in master classes, perform their pieces in show, and also work behind the scenes. I was pushed tremendously as a dancer but the most rewarding part was the platform I was given to connect with and inspire young dancers to recognize how beautiful they truly are.
Your new adventure is taking you to LA! What will you be doing out there?
I will be training full time at the renowned Mather Dance Company as well as taking class, teaching, auditioning, hiking mountains, and going to the beach with my friends occasionally.
Is there anything else you’d like the JDR family to know about you?
I am so grateful for the time I spent dancing at JDR. To be able to dance in a room full of such fun, energetic, non-judgmental individuals (and getting an amazing workout while doing it) was always a highlight of my days. Thank you to the incredible Sara & her amazing team for everything you do to make JDR all that it is, I aspire to be as wonderful, powerful, and inspiring as all of you are one day!
