JDR Spotlight is a series where we get introduce you to some of our JDR Junkies. This gives you the chance to see the variety of participants we have at Just Dance Roanoke and allows you to get to know your dancing BFF’s a little better.
Meet Beth Mays! She was our first member to make it to the Land of 1000 Dances. Since she began taking classes at the beginning of 2013, Beth has taken over 1,100 classes! She even turned her daughter, Emily, into a JDR lover, too! We are so lucky to have this inspiring woman as a constant smiling face in the front row of (almost) every class and as our biggest JDR apparel junkie! Here’s to the next 1000, Beth!
What brought you to your first class at JDR?
I was looking for something fun and different and to boost my metabolism…and I love dancing!! I went to a fundraiser for a Cave Spring High School teacher and Brandy was teaching a Zumba demo. Later, she told me about the studio and the rest is history!
What was your fitness routine prior to coming to JDR?
I was walking a couple of miles everyday. Not only did that get boring, but I began to plaetau and know I needed something different.
Has twerking always been your cardio? Or was this your first “real” dance experience?
I danced some when I was young but there was no twerking before . Taking class here doesn’t ever feel like a cardio workout class, though. It truly feels like a dance party!
If you could be a back-up dancer for anyone, who would it be?
Kelly McDow and her MJ-loving self. Also, Pink because she’s sassy and always true to herself. She is THE woman!
What’s your favorite song(s) or favorite genre to dance to?
I like them all some maybe a bit more than others. My new favorite is “Kukure” – it’s so fun! I also love “The Water Dance” and “Hoochie Mama”.
In addition to some fantastic twerking skills, what have you learned from JDR?
I love JDR because of the instructors and the people! It really feels like one big family and I have met so many great new friends. I am more confident in myself. Thank you, Kelly, for the muscles – Just Burn class continues to kick my butt and Just Sweat was a great challenge! JDR is my happy place.
Describe your JDR experience in 3 words.
Fun, sweaty, and exhilarating!
Any advice for first timers or those early in their dance fitness journey?
Just have fun, keep moving, and it all falls into place!
