JDR Spotlight is a series where we get introduce you to some of our JDR Junkies. This gives you the chance to see the variety of participants we have at Just Dance Roanoke and allows you to get to know your dancing BFF’s a little better. We’ll be kicking off this series with our “Land of 1000 Dances” members. Read on to learn more about Evelyn.
Meet Evelyn Wooden! She began taking Zumba® Fitness classes with Sara almost 6 years ago, long before we opened our doors at the studio. (So chances are high she’s technically danced over 1500 times!) Her first “official” class at the studio was the Megamix with Sara on September 24, 2012. Since then, Evelyn has taken over 1,100 classes at JDR, most of them with her sister, Terri, dancing alongside her! We love seeing Evelyn come alive and inspire others under the disco ball!
What brought you to your first class at JDR?
I was looking for dance fitness and went online. I got in touch with the Brambleton Center and signed up with Sara in the second month. I got bumped the first month. HA!
What was your fitness routine prior to coming to JDR?
Walking at Wasena Park and roller skating…I still roller skate!
Has twerking always been your cardio? Or was this your first “real” dance experience?
Well, to be perfectly honest, I used to go out a lot when I was “younger” and danced all night long…going to the club or “clurb” as the After Dark girls would say!
If you could be a back-up dancer for anyone, who would it be?
Hmmm…It would be Prince, for sure.
What’s your favorite song(s) or favorite genre to dance to?
I like all kinds of music…for me, if I can feel the music, then I’m good
In addition to some fantastic twerking skills, what have you learned from JDR?
I have learned to relax my mind. When I come into the studio, the whole time I am dancing, all I am thinking about is the rhythm of the music and letting my body go as best as I can, then my mind follows Also, I am in love with Burn with Kelly! I was never partial to mat work, weights, etc…but I feel like I was starting to plateau and my sister encouraged me to start taking burn classes. I am glad I did. Kelly really knows how to motivate and “turn it up”. She’s a real kick in the pants! LOL!
PS- have you seen Ev’s arms lately??? She’s killing it in Just Burn!
Describe your JDR experience in 3 words.
Mind-freeing, exciting, and beautiful.
Any advice for first timers or those early in their dance fitness journey?
Be yourself and don’t worry about what anyone else is doing. Always be positive, and remember, this is your journey and your creation. Make it your own!
