“No one is thinking about you. They’re thinking about themselves, just like you are.”
– Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination by Helen Felding
So many people are nervous when coming to their first class, but Just Dance Roanoke is here to tell you FEAR NOT!
Every time you enter a Just Dance Roanoke class, you are entering a judgment free zone! Just Dance Roanoke classes should be a time where you leave your inhibitions at the door, let loose and have FUN!
A few things that you should know before your first class.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day so you’re well hydrated before coming to class. Good hydration supports the healthy function of all your body’s systems and it makes the heat feel comfortable rather than overwhelming. Don’t eat heavily within 2 hours of the start of class.
Make sure that you are drinking water in class. We recommend at least 16 oz. – more if you sweat a lot. You can bring your own or purchase water at the JDR studio for $1.

Your First Class
Be Ready for Class
Arrive at the studio 10-15 minutes before your first class. This gives us time to register you into class and for you to meet your instructor and some of the class participants.
What to Wear
We suggest that you wear comfortable fitness clothing to class and light weight rubber soled shoes to class. We have a store front where we sell JDR apparel, but by no means is it required for class! You should wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and “cool”.
All participants must wear rubber soled shoes. No high heels, flip flops or bare feet on the dance floor.
We also ask that you change out of your “street shoes” before hitting the dance floor. This helps us keep the floor clean and safe for our classes.
Dance It Out!
Classes are about 60 minutes, including an 8-10 minute warm-up and 5 minute cool-down. Our highly trained instructor team will non-verbally lead you through class that will feel like a party! Don’t worry, no one’s watching or judging you so don’t be nervous.
You will feel challenged during your first class- EVERYONE does!
Always listen to your body, but challenge yourself to achieve new limits. Never be afraid to stop or step out of class if you need to, or modify the movements to fit your needs.
Your instructor will often show a move at its easiest level first. They will then move on to show other options to other class members at different levels, but they will also sometimes come back to the easier level if they see someone is struggling. Feel free to stick to those easier levels until you feel comfortable moving on, even if the instructor has upped the level. Remember this is YOUR class!
It’s normal, especially when you first get started, to feel dizzy, nauseated or lightheaded but ALWAYS be sure to sufficiently fuel and hydrate yourself prior to class. As your body builds more cardiovascular endurance, you will notice that you will be able to go longer and harder. All the class veterans remember the journey they all had to get to where they are now, so they will be your biggest cheerleaders!
No one is watching you.
We want all members to feel comfortable and confident while in class, therefore we strictly enforce a “no spectator” policy. Cross our hearts, everyone in class is singing, laughing, dancing and watching the instructor and themselves so closely that they aren’t paying attention to you!
Take your second class within 2 days
Your next class will help you work through any soreness and help you quickly build upon that cardiovascular base. Make up your mind to take 10 classes as quickly as possible, at least within a month. You will be amazed at the changes in your health, the changes in your body, your sleep, your mood, the way your clothes fit, and most of all, the way you feel about yourself.
There is great self-empowerment to be found here.
Invite a friend
Parties are always more fun when you’re friends are there too! Not to mention that studies show that a workout partner will get you moving, keep you moving and cheer you on as you work harder!
